CANTON WAS FOUNDED by Issac Swan in 1825 and soon after his arrival, Swan built a sawmill on Big Creek. This sawmill became the foundation of industry and from it the town’s businesses and neighborhoods were born. The first structure was a single room used by the original settlers, as a place to rest, while the new city found its place on the map. Thus, the start of 200 years of history in a resilient town called Canton, IL.
SINCE IT’S FOUNDING in 1825, Canton has capitalized on hard work, and a passionate spirit of its residents to build a CARING community all in a setting of nature’s beauty. Throughout history, it continued to thrive among disaster and triumph alike but remained a close-knit community through and through.
